In today’s cultural landscape, large-scale artistic initiatives increasingly depend on strong partnerships between cultural institutions, public and the private sector. Sustainable cultural development requires not only artistic ambition, but also long-term strategic support that allows projects to grow and reach international audiences.
In Armenia, the Khachaturian Festival has gradually become an example of how such collaboration can shape a cultural initiative with international ambitions. Organized by the Aram Khachaturian Cultural Foundation, the festival has developed into a platform that brings renowned musicians to Yerevan while promoting the legacy of one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century, Aram Khachaturian.
The 2025 edition of the festival was yet another success: it gathered internationally acclaimed musicians including cellist Emmanuel Graf, pianists Denis Kozhukhin and Antonio Di Cristofano, and violinist Hayk Kazazyan. The concerts were conducted by Sergey Smbatyan, Gianluca Marcianò, Vahagn Papyan and Bojan Sudic, presenting programs that connected Armenian musical heritage with the wider European concert tradition.
Since its founding in 2013 by conductor Sergey Smbatyan, artistic director and principal conductor of the Armenian Symphony Orchestra, the Khachaturian Festival has sought not only to celebrate the composer’s music but also to position Armenia within the broader international classical music environment.
An important element in the festival’s development has been the engagement of the private sector. Freedom Broker Armenia, the festival’s strategic sponsor, views its cooperation with the Aram Khachaturian Cultural Foundation as part of a broader vision that connects cultural development with social responsibility and long-term investment in the arts.
According to the company’s director, Hovak Hovakimyan, the partnership reflects an understanding that cultural life is an essential component of national development.

Economic progress alone cannot define a country’s future. Sustainable development also depends on investments in education, culture and the formation of a strong cultural identity. True progress emerges where financial success and cultural mission intersect.”

Beyond supporting the festival’s concerts, this collaboration has also enabled educational initiatives aimed at young musicians. As part of the festival, young opera soloists were given the opportunity to participate in master classes led by Italian conductor Gianluca Marcianò and to perform together in a concluding concert.
More than fifty soloists applied for the program, demonstrating the strong demand for professional opportunities that connect emerging artists with internationally acclaimed musicians. Such initiatives reflect a growing recognition that festivals can serve not only as performance platforms, but also as spaces for artistic education and professional exchange.
For Sergey Smbatyan, partnerships with institutions and companies that share a long-term cultural vision make it possible to expand the scope of the festival and strengthen its international presence.

Collaboration between the Aram Khachaturian Cultural Foundation and Freedom Broker Armenia allows us to think more ambitiously and develop projects that expand the international reach of the festival,” he says. “In order for cultural initiatives to grow, artistic ideas must be supported by people and organizations that believe in their value and are ready to invest in their realization.”

The Khachaturian Festival was held with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia, while the Yerevan Municipality served as its main partner. In a broader sense, the development of the Khachaturian Festival illustrates how collaboration between cultural institutions, public structures and the private sector can create a sustainable cultural ecosystem. In a region where cultural initiatives increasingly seek international visibility, such partnerships may become an essential model for the future of artistic development.
Since its founding in 2023, The Khachaturian Festival has thrived through partnerships between the Aram Khachaturian Cultural Foundation, public institutions and private sponsors like Freedom Broker Armenia, creating a model of how collaboration can build a sustainable cultural ecosystem with international reach. The orchestra’s growing international profile and cultural significance will be further highlighted on 14th April 2026, when Lang Lang will perform at the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra’s 20th anniversary gala.
