‘David Bowie: You’re Not Alone’ Review – Immersive Bowie Exhibition Transforms Lightroom London

David Bowie: You’re Not Alone at the Lightroom in Kings Cross, London, goes beyond spectacle, transforming the immersive exhibition format into something genuinely transportive — a visual and sonic experience that feels both intimate and expansive. This is immersive art in the true sense of the word.

Created with the blessing of the David Bowie Archive and inspired by a lyric from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, the exhibition unfolds as a kind of living artwork. It traces Bowie’s life, influences and ever-evolving identity through a fluid, compelling narrative that moves between music, philosophy and spirituality.

The title itself nods to Rock ’n’ Roll Suicide, anchoring the experience in one of Bowie’s most emotionally resonant moments. From there, the show expands outward: iconic performances and personas are interwoven with archival footage, newsreels and TV appearances, all threaded together through Bowie’s own voice. Rather than a chronological biography, it becomes a sensory collage of a singular creative mind.

What sets David Bowie: You’re Not Alone apart is its sheer scale. Lightroom’s four-storey projection walls, combined with spatial audio, create a fully enveloping environment. At times, it borders on sensory overload — but that feels entirely fitting for an artist defined by excess, transformation and reinvention.

Directed by Tom Wexler and Mark Grimmer (the dream team behind David Bowie Is  at the V&A), the show draws from thousands of hours of archival material. The result is a carefully curated journey through landmark moments — from Space Oddity to Let’s Dance — highlighting just how radically Bowie reshaped popular culture.

“The question we always ask ourselves when we’re making shows for Lightroom is: what can we do in this room that you can’t do anywhere else, and why tell the story in this format? It’s a new kind of storytelling — not linear, not quite a documentary, and not a traditional exhibition. It’s a hybrid in the best sense.

We didn’t want to impose a heavy curatorial lens. Instead, we spent years going through hundreds of hours of Bowie’s interviews. From that, recurring themes emerged — curiosity, characters, outsider art, rock ’n’ roll theatre, change and spirituality. These themes allowed us to construct a narrative that isn’t chronological but gives a real sense of his life, influences and evolution, all told in his own words.”

A wider programme of Bowie Nights — featuring names such as Anna Calvi, Adam Buxton, Carlos Alomar, Miranda Sawyer and Jonathan Barnbrook — extends the exhibition beyond the gallery, opening up a broader cultural dialogue.

Ultimately, You’re Not Alone feels less like an exhibition and more like stepping inside Bowie’s imagination: fragmented, theatrical and endlessly fascinating. It’s an unmissable experience for Bowie fans and for anyone interested in the intersection of music, art and identity. Bowie resisted fixed definitions throughout his life — musically, visually and in terms of gender — and this show reflects that same fluidity.

David Bowie: You’re Not Alone runs at Lightroom from 22 April to 10 October 2026. Find more information here.
