As the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 transforms Vienna into the centre of European pop culture this May, Vangardist Agency is making history with the launch of The Queer Embassy — the first dedicated queer safer space ever created for Eurovision fans, artists and delegations.
Opening during the Eurovision Song Contest at the iconic Volksgarten Pavillon, The Queer Embassy operates throughout Eurovision week as a central cultural and community hub for LGBTIQ+ visitors from across Europe. Hosted under the banner Queers in the Garden, the initiative combines club nights, public screenings, after-parties, pizza gatherings and daytime programming in one inclusive location in the heart of Vienna.
For decades, Eurovision has stood as one of Europe’s most visible celebrations of queer pop culture and self-expression. Yet despite its longstanding connection to queer audiences, the contest has never before offered an official space specifically dedicated to the LGBTIQ+ community. The Queer Embassy aims to change that.
Located within walking distance of all major Eurovision venues, the Embassy offers what organisers describe as “a curated safer space where fans can gather, celebrate and be themselves without inhibition.” The venue is open to everyone — including gay, lesbian, queer, trans, non-binary and gender-fluid visitors, drag performers, bisexual audiences, straight allies and international fan groups. Entry is free for trans individuals, drag artists and refugees.
The project arrives at a critical moment for Vienna’s queer community. According to the recent “Queer in Wien II” study, discrimination and violence against queer people in public spaces has risen significantly in the Austrian capital. The study found that 38% of queer people experienced discrimination or violence in public spaces within the last year, while nearly half of respondents reported avoiding certain areas of the city to feel safe.
At the same time, many of Vienna’s independent queer venues and community spaces are disappearing — increasing concerns around visibility, safety and belonging. The Queer Embassy responds directly to this climate by creating a physical gathering space centred around community care, visibility and celebration during one of Europe’s largest cultural events.
Vangardist Agency partnered with their long-running queer nightlife platform Männer im Garten to develop the initiative. Produced alongside OMG Vienna, Männer im Garten has become one of Vienna’s most influential queer event series since launching in 2016. Celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2026, the monthly garden party has built a reputation as a vital safer space for Vienna’s LGBTIQ+ nightlife scene.
With Queers in the Garden, the organisers are expanding that experience into a full Eurovision side-event programme designed for both local communities and international visitors.
The Embassy itself is housed inside one of Vienna’s architectural gems. Designed by renowned Austrian architect Oswald Haerdtl in the 1950s, the Volksgarten Pavillon sits among Vienna’s historic rose gardens near Heldenplatz. Originally conceived as a modernist “milk pavilion,” the building features terraces, flowing water elements and open-air gardens that transition from daytime café culture into vibrant nightlife after dark.
Organisers say the Embassy remains open to Eurovision delegations, performers and fan clubs still seeking a venue during the contest week. In a symbolic first for Eurovision culture, the contest’s two largest fan clubs have already confirmed they will host a joint gathering together under the same roof.
As Eurovision continues to evolve beyond music into a broader cultural phenomenon, The Queer Embassy signals a new era of visibility and community infrastructure around the contest — one rooted not only in celebration, but also in solidarity, inclusion and safer spaces for queer audiences across Europe.
